Microsoft is upgrading its Windows Hello authentication system, which includes facial and fingerprint recognition, in Windows 11.

This overhaul is currently in beta testing with Windows Insiders and introduces visual updates, new iconography, and enhancements to passkeys.

Improved User Interface Across Platforms

The redesigned Windows Hello interface will not only be visible on the Windows 11 login screen but also when users utilize passkeys to access websites and applications.

The Windows team stated, “We redesigned Windows security credential user experiences for passkey, creating a cleaner experience that supports secure and quick authentication.”

This improvement allows users to switch between authentication methods and select passkeys or devices with greater ease.

Streamlining Passkey Usage

While Microsoft has already integrated passkeys into Windows 11, the existing process for using a passkey from a mobile device requires scanning QR codes and involves an outdated user interface.

The upcoming changes will greatly enhance the sign-in experience for passkeys and Microsoft account authentication as part of this comprehensive Windows Hello update.

New API for Third-Party Integration

To facilitate a smoother experience, Microsoft has developed a new API for third-party password and passkey managers.

This integration will enable developers to connect directly to the modern Windows Hello experience.

Additionally, Windows 11 users will be able to use passkeys from mobile devices to authenticate with applications and websites on their PCs.

Users will also have the option to save passkeys in third-party applications or sync them with their Microsoft account.

Beta Testing and Future Rollout

The new Windows Hello experience is currently being tested in the beta channel (23H2) and is expected to be available in the dev channel (24H2) once builds resume.

Microsoft anticipates that this updated Windows Hello UI will be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the coming months, significantly enhancing the authentication process.
